A Digital Executor Is Not the Same as an Executor
The person named in your will cannot log into Gmail by showing a death certificate. Here is why the court job and the login job are different, and how to name both without creating a fight.

You named an executor. You assumed that person could open your laptop. That assumption is how families lose a month.
An executor is a court job. A digital executor is a login job. They can be the same human. They often should not be, and even when they are, the paperwork that makes one official does almost nothing for the other.
This is not legal advice. Fiduciary power is state law. What follows is the practical split, so you stop writing one name and hoping the internet cooperates.

What an executor can actually do?
An executor (personal representative, in some states) is appointed to gather the estate, pay debts, and distribute what the will says. Banks, title companies, and probate clerks know this person. They have a letter. They can close a brokerage. They can sell a house.
They cannot, with that letter alone:
- Unlock an iPhone.
- Open Gmail.
- Export a 1Password vault.
- Convince Discord, Steam, or a crypto exchange that the terms of service have a probate exception.
- Override Apple Legacy Contact or Google Inactive Account Manager. Those tools sit above the will. We mapped that in your will does not beat Apple or Google.
Some companies have a form for fiduciaries. Many have a form that takes six months and returns a PDF of account metadata, not the inbox. Some have no form. The help article that says "contact us with a death certificate" is not a login.
What a digital executor actually is?
There is no universal legal title. People mean one of three things, and they mix them:
- The person you told to do the clicking. They have (or will receive) passcodes, password-manager emergency access, hardware keys, and a list of what to freeze first. This is a job you invent. KinSwitch can deliver the kit. The court does not.
- The person named in a will or power of attorney as having authority over digital assets. That language helps after a company agrees to talk to a fiduciary. It does not create a password. Under the uniform act, it also loses to a platform tool you already set.
- The person named inside Apple, Google, Facebook, and so on. That is a product setting, not an estate document. Different companies, different humans, if you were careless.
If those three names are three different people, you have a committee. Committees fight in week one.
Why the kindest person is often the wrong clicker?
The executor you trust with the house may be the last person you want inside your email. Email is not a filing cabinet. It is an autobiography you did not mean to publish: search history adjacent, old fights, medical portals, the affair, the business you never told the kids about, the donations, the drafts.
You can name your spouse as executor and your sibling as the person who gets the password manager. You can name a professional as executor and a technically calm adult child as the clicker. You can name the same person for both, on purpose, after you have thought about the inbox.
What you cannot do is pretend the court appointment is a master key. Your email is the master key. Whoever can open it can reset almost everything else. That is a gift and a weapon. Assign it like one.
The collision pattern
Here is the version we see:
The will names one adult. Apple Legacy Contact is still an ex. Google Inactive Account Manager points at a college roommate. The password manager emergency contact is a coworker who left the company. KinSwitch beneficiaries are current. Four people think they are in charge. None of them have the passcode to the phone.
Each of them is following a instruction. None of them are following the same one.
If you are the person who just got the KinSwitch email, stop and get the named humans in one thread before anyone hits "forgot password." What to do when the KinSwitch email arrives is the 72-hour version of that rule.
How to name both without creating a fight?
Write it down in three places, with the same names:
The will and the power of attorney. Name digital assets. Name who may direct access. If your lawyer has never put those words in a document, that is the meeting. Do not assume "residue of the estate" includes a Gmail inbox.
The platform tools. Apple Legacy Contact. Google IAM. Facebook. The password manager's emergency access. Same humans, or a written reason they differ.
The delivery. A short note that will actually be read in week one: who clicks, who calls the lawyer, who does not get the vault, what not to wipe. Put it in KinSwitch, not only in a binder. The If I'm Gone journal is a decent skeleton. The password manager break-glass kit is the vault half.
If the digital person is not the executor, say so in a sentence both of them will see. "Jordan handles the house. Sam handles the logins. Sam does not move money. Jordan does not reset 2FA." That sentence prevents a week of parallel damage.
A job description, not a vibe
If you ask someone to be the clicker, tell them what the job is:
- Keep the email account alive until the rest of the map is copied.
- Do not factory-reset phones. The locked iPhone problem is how well-meaning people destroy the photos.
- Do not memorialize social accounts until the family means it.
- Write down what opened and what failed.
- Stop when they are tired.
If they would not do that job, pick someone else. Kindness is not a credential for 2FA.
The test
Ask your executor, out loud: "Can you open my laptop next Tuesday?" If the answer is a story about the will, they have the court job and not the login job. Then ask the person you actually want clicking: "If the email arrives, what do you do first?" If they do not know, send them the 72-hour post and run Test Delivery.
Two names. Two jobs. Same story in the will, the Settings screens, and the switch.
